Dates and Deadlines

As we approach April (where has the year gone?), my diary seems to be filling up with all sorts of exciting things, so much so, I have gone back to the 80s and invested in a Filofax. Despite my techy, geeky nuances, I still like to write things down and seem to have endless scraps of paper, flyers and business cards crammed into my diary which, in itself, is likewise crammed into an overflowing handbag. I decided that a Filofax was the answer and would save me the hassle of having to transfer notes etc. each year into the new diary whilst providing lots of pocket things to stuff scraps of wisdom in. It arrives, in all its purple, leathery glory, on Thursday. So, you heard it here first – from Friday, I am officially organised.

WBN logo in headlineKey dates, waving at me like excited children, are the deadline for submissions to our ‘Schooldays’ anthology, our next poetry/flash fiction competition and World Book Night, for which I have been selected to give out a lovely anthology (Essential Poems for the Staying Alive Trilogy) as well as some copies of The Darker Side of Love. I am trying to get a Paper Swans event together for the evening, so if there are any poets out there based around the South East who would be interested in reading, do drop me an email.

We’ve had an increased number of submissions for ‘Schooldays’ and we can’t wait to start reading them and start the longlist. From call to submissions to publication is a lengthy process and if you have submitted, please bear with us. We will update you via twitter/facebook about when you might expect to hear from us, but it is likely to be May/June.

Our last competition was popular and we are hoping for even more entries this month. Our guest judge is poet, Wendy Pratt and the winners get their work published on beautiful postcards which will be sold and/or given out at literary events. Talking of which, this weekend I am going with a fellow poet and ‘Schooldays’ editor to the Oxford Literary Festival to let people know about Paper Swans and check out venues for our mini-tour in the summer. We might even get time to attend some of the sessions…

Now, this is my kind of cake...

Now, this is my kind of cake…

Most exciting of all, on 1st April, we celebrate our first birthday! I can’t believe how much we have crammed into one year and we have so many other ideas for the future that it just makes me want to stuff a large piece of birthday cake in my mouth and shout ‘Hurrah!’.  But not at the same time.  To celebrate our birthday we are giving away 10 copies of The Darker Side of Love.  To be a part of our giveaway, click here for details.

Don’t forget to catch up with us on Facebook and Twitter for our day-to-day comings and goings and I hope the reluctant spring weather will clear out any writing cobwebs and get those words flowing…
