New Year, New Goals

Happy New Year from Paper Swans Press! We hope you got in some reading and writing amongst the merriment and mince pies of Christmas. We are looking forward to a year of good poetry and flash fiction and have some interesting ideas up our sleeve for 2017…revisiting projects from the past and forging forward into pastures new.

Reflecting on 2016, this was the year we:

In 2017, we plan to:

  • publish two new anthologies: The Best of British and our YA anthology (title tbc).
  • relaunch our online competition for poetry and flash fiction.
  • launch a new submission call for our individual pamphlet competition.
  • be speaking at The Only Way is Indie event in February.

PLUS, there are other events in the pipeline that we need to confirm before we say anything, but will keep you posted.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have supported us, be it by buying a book, reading at an event, submitting to us or just cheering us on. Poetry is a tough world to be in and it’s even harder as a small press, especially when it comes the nitty gritty of selling our wares. Breaking into ‘big’ bookshops is nigh on impossible or not financially viable, so we rely of word-of-mouth and internet sales. Please do keep buying from small presses — we all really appreciate the extra few minutes it takes to bypass the big fish and find your way to our websites. We DO talk to each other too — there is a great community amongst small presses. If you are a reader or writer, or just interested in publishing, you might consider coming to The Only Way is Indie, held at The Nottingham Writers Studio on 12th February. It will be a great opportunity to meet with book and literary magazine publishers, chat with editors and get to know a little more about behind the scenes.

Most importantly, Paper Swans Press has always been about supporting emerging writers as well as publishing the more established voices. We will continue to do this in and are particularly excited about our forthcoming YA anthology, written by poets and writers aged 13-18. To give a platform to young writers and poets gives us enormous pleasure and we hope you will enjoy their work as much as we have.

Wishing you all a very literary new year and a poetic 2017!
