On Friday 10th June, as part of The Poetry Shelf, Paper Swans went to Sissinghurst Castle in Kent, home of Vita Sackville-West. We were there with the winners of our ‘Poetry of Roses’ competition, judged by Jill Munro. It was a beautiful evening (no rain — yay!) and wandering around the gardens without the public allowed me to pretend it was all mine…that I was Vita, strolling through her beautiful flowers, a flirtatious look over her shoulder to Virginia…or perhaps that was just me! However, it was an idyllic setting and some of our poets were positioned around the gardens readings Vita’s poems to our guests before the main readings began.

Six of our eight poets were able to make it: Mary Anne Smith, Ed Broom, Lawrence Wilson, Yvonne Marjot, Olivia Dawson and Nikki Griffin, each reading their winning poem.

After a short break, the individual poets read: Jessica Mookherjee, Abegail Morley and Jill Munro. Jessica has a pamphlet coming out soon with TellTale Press, Abegail has just had her latest book, The Skin Diary, published by Nine Arches Press and Jill’s pamphlet, The Quilted Multiverse, was the winner of the Fair Acre Press pamphlet competition and was published last month.

It really was a most beautiful evening, organised by Jo Jones and her team — all gardeners at Sissinghurst. The beautiful posy of flowers we were each given at the end of the evening, really was the icing on the cake.
