#WorldBookNight and other news…

IMG_0209Yesterday was #WorldBookNight and we were delighted to be selected to give away copies of the ‘Staying Alive’ poetry anthology. The theory behind it is to get people who wouldn’t normally read, reading. I think this is especially pertinent when it comes to poetry as (and this is a huge generalisation) it still tends to get lumped into one genre and associated with those dusty English lessons from school.

We thought long and hard about where to distribute them: YMCA? Homeless people? Prisons? And then we realised how utterly patronising we were being – assuming anyone in these situations wouldn’t read poetry! So, after giving ourselves a good talking to, we realised that many people we know who won’t read poetry are right under our noses (my family included!). So, we have decided to give them out to anyone who shows resistance to poetry. We have plans to ask people in the street if they read poetry and if they say no, thrust an anthology into their unwilling hands and ask them to accept a free book to try it out. I’ll keep you posted on how it goes…

In other news, after weeks of reading and note-taking, we have had our first editorial meeting for ‘Schooldays’ and it looks like it’s going to be an amazing anthology. We had a record amount of submissions (nearly 200!) and there was some really beautiful writing. If you have submitted, we are hoping to let you know if you have been selected by the end of May/early June.

I want to announce that we have changed our Twitter username to @paperswanspress.  If you are already a follower, it will make no difference except that you need to ‘@’ us at the new username. (We’ve kept the old one too, so tweets won’t get completely misdirected)

Finally, I want to share this gorgeous shop-window I came across today. Made me smile…
